Your outdoor lights have been flickering for weeks, or maybe your transformer is tripping every time it rains. You’re finally ready to deal with it and now you’re staring at a choice between LED and halogen. Here’s what that decision actually looks like in practice, from someone who’s swapped out hundreds of fixtures across Albuquerque properties.

Why halogen keeps showing up in older systems

Halogen fixtures dominated residential landscape lighting for decades, and you’ll still find them on most homes built before 2015. The warm amber glow is familiar and genuinely attractive. Run ten fixtures five hours a night and halogen is pulling about 750 watts; LED pulls around 65. Color and appearance: the honest version

Retrofit also has a technical limit. Some older magnetic transformers don’t play well with LED loads, particularly with very small LED wattages. Minimum load requirements can cause flickering or buzzing.
