Tree Trimming Techniques

Keeping your trees trimmed is like keeping yourself well-groomed.  People notice and appreciate the effort. It is also healthier.  Here’s a rundown of the types of tree-shaping techniques and the benefits they provide.

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning removes selective branches from the tree’s canopy without changing the shape of the tree. Crown thinning allows more light to reach leaves, reduces wind resistance, and reduces the strain on larger limbs.

Crown Lifting

Crown lifting removes the lower branches of a tree to raise the crown. This creates more space under the tree, allows more light to reach the inner branches, and lightens mass.  Crown lifting may also provide more space above sidewalks, roads, and structures like homes.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction removes select limbs while maintaining the structure of the crown.  This strategic pruning technique reduces the height or mass of large branches while retaining core limbs. Crown reduction reduces bulk without altering the shape of the tree. It promotes tree health by encouraging new growth.

Pollarding

Pollarding is cutting off the upper branches of a tree and leaving only the main trunk and lower branches.  This technique reduces the size of a tree and is commonly used when a tree outgrows its space.

Dead Pruning

Dead pruning removes dead, diseased, dying, and unwanted branches. This improves the health and look of the tree while preventing unstable limbs from becoming a hazard.
